Learning music is a physical, intellectual, and emotional exercise heightened by talent and passion. The study of music performance encases both solitary and collaborative work environments. Discipline, perseverance, delayed gratification, and self-confidence are life skills musical performance promotes.

Partnership

A student’s individuality is expressed through her/his instrument. A safe environment nurtures that individuality—free to make mistakes, to try new techniques, and to express his/herself. I advocate tailored learning, sharing a dialogue instead of a monologue. I work with students to define short and long-term performance goals per their abilities and desires by being open, friendly, and firm. I am not an authoritarian. A one-size-fits-all approach stifles initiative and imagination. Great learning happens when a student is part of a collaborative environment where students are actively engaged in their own learning. Working together to establish: various exercises to practice, comfort levels, and musical style, supports self-determination, enhanced ownership and responsibility. This fuels greater motivation and confidence in overcoming inevitable challenges while offering progressive outcomes.

Solitary and Collaborative

Musical study is often a solitary experience. Finding music that inspires the student, songs/compositions he or she loves, helps motivate him/her through the process, developing self-motivation. And since music is often performed with others, participating in musical groups encourages him/her to be creative and flexible.

Physical, Intellectual, and Emotional

Physical learning requires repetition, muscle memory, and body awareness. Regular practice and measured progress helps advance growth. Discipline is imperative. Once the right music is identified, along with developing instrument skill, we explore the emotions that various songs or types of music stir, and then learn to artistically communicate what the student feels and why.

As proven in my own life, music helps an individual grow in multiple ways. I’m excited to help students discover effective ways to make meaningful and powerful music.
